Miracle mum brings premature baby son back to life with two hours of loving cuddles after doctors pronounce him dead, By Mail Foreign Service. It was a final chance to say goodbye for grieving mother Kate Ogg after doctors gave up hope of saving her premature baby. She tearfully told her lifeless son - born at 27 weeks weighing 2lb - how much she loved him and cuddled him tightly, not wanting to let him go. Although little Jamie's twin sister Emily had been delivered successfully, doctors had given Mrs Ogg the news all mothers dread - that after 20 minutes of battling to get her son to breathe, they had declared him dead. Having given up on a miracle, Mrs Ogg unwrapped the baby from his blanket and held him against her skin. And then an extraordinary thing happened. After two hours of being hugged, touched and spoken to by his mother, the little boy began showing signs of life. At first, it was just a gasp for air that was dismissed by doctors as a reflex action. But then the startled mother fed him a little breast milk on her finger and he started breathing normally. 'I thought, "Oh my God, what's going on",' said Mrs Ogg. 'A short time later he opened his eyes. It was a miracle. Then he held out his hand and grabbed my finger. 'He opened his eyes and moved his head from side to side. The doctor kept shaking his head saying, "I don't believe it, I don't believe it".' The Australian mother spoke publicly for the first time yesterday to highlight the importance of skin-on-skin care for sick babies, which is being used at an increasing number of British hospitals. 'He started gasping more and more regularly. I thought, "Oh my God, what's going on?" A short time later he opened his eyes. It was a miracle' In most cases, babies are rushed off to intensive care if there is a serious problem during the birth. But the 'kangaroo care' technique, named after the way kangaroos hold their young in a pouch next to their bodies, allows the mother to act as a human incubator to keep babies warm, stimulated and fed. Pre-term and low birth-weight babies treated with the skin-to-skin method have also been shown to have lower infection rates, less severe illness, improved sleep patterns and are at reduced risk of hypothermia. Mrs Ogg and her husband David told how doctors gave up on saving their son after a three-hour labour in a Sydney hospital in March. The doctor asked me had we chosen a name for our son,' said Mrs Ogg. 'I said, "Jamie", and he turned around with my son already wrapped up and said, "We've lost Jamie, he didn't make it, sorry". 'It was the worse feeling I've ever felt. I unwrapped Jamie from his blanket. He was very limp. 'I took my gown off and arranged him on my chest with his head over my arm and just held him. He wasn't moving at all and we just started talking to him. 'We told him what his name was and that he had a sister. We told him the things we wanted to do with him throughout his life. 'Jamie occasionally gasped for air, which doctors said was a reflex action. But then I felt him move as if he were startled, then he started gasping more and more regularly. 'I gave Jamie some breast milk on my finger, he took it and started regular breathing.' Mrs Ogg held her son, now five months old and fully recovered, as she spoke on the Australian TV show Today Tonight. Her husband added: 'Luckily I've got a very strong, very smart wife. 'She instinctively did what she did. If she hadn't done that, Jamie probably wouldn't be here.' http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1306283/Miracle-premature-baby-declared-dead-doctors-revived-mothers-touch.html# Mother of baby who 'came back from the dead' fears her son may suffer brain damage because of doctor's lack of action. 27th August 2010. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1306820/Mother-baby-came-dead-fears-son-suffer-brain-damage-doctors-lack-action.html#ixzz0y76NUipI]]> Fri, 15 Jul 2011 19:28:05 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/78/3rd-stage-placenta-postpartum-newborn/miracle-babys-life-revived-by-mothers-touch-baby-jamie-australia.html <![CDATA[Shalyne getting the Epidural]]> Unknown]]> Fri, 15 Jul 2011 19:11:28 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/77/epidurals/shalyne-getting-the-epidural.html <![CDATA[Labor and Delivery]]>

It does a baby good. But what if you're having troubles? Where can you turn for support, coaching and help? One option is to work with a lactation consultant. Think of them as your personal trainer in all things breastfeeding. As health care providers, they specialize in offering nursing assistance and education for families. Many hospitals have lactation consultants on staff. Or you can hire one to come to your home for a personal consultation. To me, they provide "life and death" assistance since not being able to feed your baby can be a scary emergency. To find a lactation consultant in your local area, check the International Lactation Consultant Association. Yes, I had heard stories from new mamas that it was "difficult," but frankly I didn't believe it would be for me. How wrong I was. The reality is for most women breastfeeding takes a lot of work, patience, observation and prayer. When Griffin was born after a grueling 27 hours of labor, he came out of the womb crying... probably because he was stuck in the canal for three hours and was HUNGRY. It took us nearly an hour to get him to latch, and to do so I had to use a nipple shield. Sigh. This wasn't the vision I had of my new baby easily accepting my breast as a loving source of nourishment and comfort. I got Griffin to latch the next day without the nipple shield, and we've been getting better at it ever since. Along the way, I've talked with other moms, consulted with TWO lactation consultants (who should get extra angel wings for their amazing service to motherhood and all things good), and have the best husband ever who's helped me at every turn. Six weeks in, I have to say it gets easier, but it still can have its ups and downs. Now I totally understand why women switch to formula. Breastfeeding is not for the faint of heart. I'd love to breastfeed Griffin for at least one year, but after getting through this first month I'm not so sure if I'll make it. LOL! I'm gonna believe all the mamas who say that breastfeeding gets SO MUCH EASIER and trust that we can make it a year. In the meantime, I want to share 10 tips that have made breastfeeding easier for me. I hope this helps some new mamas out there who need encouragement. I know that I did. http://mamanatural.com/top-10-breastfeeding-tips/]]> Fri, 15 Jul 2011 18:22:20 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/69/education-basics/5-breastfeeding-tips-that-made-life-easier-for-me.html <![CDATA[Natural Childbirth Scenes - Part 3, Reflections & Slideshow]]> No pain medication. 27-hour labor. Doula and midwife assisted. Part 1 - Labor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aWxDXjtaxs Part 3 - Reflections: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTRoM-QzL9o After part one, I labored for another half hour and then filled the tub. My midwife talked about rupturing the water sac if I wanted to speed things up, but I declined. In the tub, I popped the sac naturally (YEAH!) and started to get the urge to push. My midwife checked me and said she could feel the baby's head. So I went for it. I was on all fours and pushing my guts out. I had intense 4-push-urge contractions and everyone thought this baby would be out by 9 p.m. Then things started to slow. Eventually, I got out of the tub. I was wiped out and my uterus was beyond exhausted. By 9 p.m. I was delirious with fatigue and dread. I honestly didn't know how I could get the strength to move forward and push the baby out. I asked if I could go to sleep and deliver in the morning. Ha! It didn't help that I hadn't eaten in 12 hours and I couldn't imagine trying. The baby was stuck in the same position for nearly 2 hours but thankfully he showed no signs of distress. The midwife and nurse wanted to kick start my uterus again, so began talking about pitocin and nipple stimulation. We tried nipple stimulation with wet rags and then breast pumps to activate stronger contractions. Cynthia was bombarded with pages that night and had to leave the room often. Once the pump's affect set in, I did have more intense contractions but, with the midwife gone, we didn't seize the opportunity. My midwife came back in and recommended pitocin. She also mentioned ideas like forceps and vacuum extraction. I was terrified of pitocin as I thought it would keep me contracting long after the labor was through. I was also concerned that it wasn't "natural." The nurse assured me she would only give me 2 drops (literally) which would give me the oomph to push this baby out and then I'd be done. The midwife, doula, Mike, and the nurse all felt like this was the right move so I went with it. Sure enough, once the two drops were in me I was squatting on a stool beside the bed with strong contractions again (although they weren't as strong as the breast pump contractions). I pushed like no one's business. After the first couple cycles, Mike and the midwife saw the baby's head beginning to crown! After a couple more push cycles, the midwife caught my baby and pressed him to my naked chest. Praise the Lord! The baby was very alert, with eyes open and scanning the room right from the start. He promptly began to cry for an hour straight while we all fumbled to get the breastfeeding latch right. I think the delivery was just as traumatic for him as it was for me.]]> Fri, 15 Jul 2011 18:16:29 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/67/natural-birth/natural-childbirth-scenes-part-2-delivery-graphic.html <![CDATA[Natural Childbirth Scenes - Part 1, Labor]]> No pain medication. 27-hour labor. Part 2 - Delivery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSnC8a2xizQ Part 3 - Reflections: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTRoM-QzL9o Buckle up everyone, here's my birthing story! It's a big one, so we've divided it into three parts. Labor began at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept 10 and lasted through the night and into the morning. I was unable to sleep, but managing fairly well. We called our doula over around noon and soon it was time to drive to the alternative birthing center at a nearby hospital. When the midwife checked me out I was 5cm dilated. Yeah for the rookie mom! We were worried I'd be at a 1 or 2. I continued to labor in the birthing center - mainly in the shower and down on all fours with the birthing ball - till 4 p.m. When my midwife rechecked me I was at a 7! Life was good. I had hope! I labored for 2 more hours... very intense, very painful and thank God for Mike who literally held my back together with every contraction to help offset the pressure. I was rechecked at 6 p.m. and was making progress. We labored for another half hour and then filled the birthing tub...]]> Fri, 15 Jul 2011 18:10:23 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/66/natural-birth/natural-childbirth-scenes-part-1-labor.html <![CDATA[Breastfeeding Video - Breastfeeding Tips On Scheduling]]> This video answers the question: "How often should I breastfeed my baby?" It is offered to women at 36-37 weeks and reduces the chance of needing caesarean section. It is a safe procedure and is successful about 40-50% of the time. On this occasion I used a drug to help relax the womb first. While most women find it uncomfortable, it isn't usually painful. If you have a tender uterus anyway, it is more likely to hurt. The baby in this video had a reassuring fetal monitoring right before I started the procedure and the fetal heart was checked afterwards. If a longer attempt at ECV was carried out then we check half way through too with the ultrasound. Transient changes in the baby's heart rate are not uncommon and usually settle after a few minutes. Very occasionally they don't settle and a caesarean section needs to be done. For the ECV shown, the baby does a forward somersault anticlockwise. The first step is to lift the baby's bottom out from your pelvis and move her to lying transversely. Often that is the most difficult part. Overall, it normally takes between 1 and 2 minutes to do the turn - any longer than that and the chance of success goes down. It is more likely to succeed in the following situations: - if you have had a baby before - if there is a normal amount of water around the baby - if your baby has his knees bent - if his or her bottom isn't engaged in your pelvis - if the baby's head is not right up against the placenta During an ECV uterine contractions can occur and we generally just wait until they pass. Is it safe? One of the best quality research on safety comes from Oxford in the UK (incidentally, where I trained to do them) and they looked at just over 800 consecutive ECVs. The chance of needing emergency CS during or just after the ECV was 1 in 200. The risk of the placenta coming away (abruption) was 0.1% and no babies died due to the procedure. These figures are similar to other research that is available and confirm the safety of ECV. Approximately 3% of babies turn back to breech after successful ECV and 3% of unsuccessful ECVs turn spontaneously to head-first afterwards. It is best that the baby receive this via lactation aid because: 1. The baby is still on the breast and breastfeeding. 2. Babies learn to breastfeed by breastfeeding. 3. Mothers learn to breastfeed by breastfeeding. 4. The baby is still getting milk from the breast thus helping increase the mothers milk production. 5. The baby is not likely to reject the breast as he would if he were supplemented by bottle or by any method not on the breast. 6. There is more to breastfeeding than breastmilk; the baby and mother are in close physical contact. One way to introduce the tube is to insert it while the baby is at the breast as in this video clip. The other is to line up the tube with the nipple and latch the baby on the breast and lactation aid tube at the same time. Note the position of the baby: 1. The babys chin touches the breast but nose does not touch. 2. The baby covers more of the areola with his lower lip than his upper lip. 3. The baby is slightly tilted up towards the mother. The baby has now fed from both breasts and is not getting much milk flow (mostly nibbling at the breast—see video clips of babies drinking or not drinking). It is time to supplement. Note the following: 1. The breast tissue is eased out of the way so that the corner of the babys mouth is visible. 2. The fact that the baby is tilted slightly upwards makes it easier to find the corner of the babys mouth and insert the tube. 3. The tube is inserted in the corner of the babys mouth. 4. The tube is pushed almost straight back towards the back of the babys throat but also slightly upward toward the roof of the babys mouth. 5. The milk moves down the tube to the babys mouth, but the baby does not drink (see video clips of babies drinking or not drinking). Something is not working. 6. The mother is attempting compression, but compression should be done when the baby is sucking and not drinking, not when the baby is not sucking at all. Moreover, compression while the baby is being supplemented at the breast with a lactation aid is not necessary. 7. At 21 seconds into the video, I fiddle with the tube placement, and now it starts working. The baby is drinking. 8. Notice the baby pops his eyes open when he starts getting milk again. Babies are not lazy; they respond to milk flow. Young babies such as this one tend to fall asleep when the flow of milk is slow, not necessarily if they have had enough. 9. More fiddling with the tube at about 35 seconds. If the baby is well latched on and tube is well placed, supplementing using the lactation aid takes no more time than giving the baby the bottle or finger feeding. Using finger feeding to supplement when the baby takes the breast is not the best approach either. 10. At about 1 minute into the video, I pull the babys chin down a bit. Remember, good latch and good placement of the tube make this system work best. Pulling down the chin gets more of the breast into the babys mouth. 11. At about 1 minute and 18 seconds, we bring the baby around even more asymmetrically by having the mother push the babys bottom in with her forearm. 12. At about 1 minute and 55 seconds, milk comes out of the babys mouth means something is not right. Baby has slipped off the breast or the tube has moved. Fiddling with the tube again makes it work properly again. NOTE This video is courtesy of Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute (NBCI). It's wonderful to see a commercial company make the effort to hire excellent and well qualified people to produce a high quality marketing video that is informative and exhibiting Best Practice. Well Done Ameda! We can't reccomend this video highly enough, but although Ameda make it available for file share on the site (presumably they are happy with viral replication - it is a marketing tool after all!) we can't get it to load properly. We urge you to go to the site and see all of it: http://www.ameda.com/breastfeeding/started/latch_on.aspx The site also contains excellent breastfeeding support advice. The pity of it being somewhat speeded up here, is you can't get a sense of the wonderful 'bobbing' motion that the baby is doing, as it signals to the mother that it would like to breastfeed, as it's getting hungry. This 'bobbing' is an excellent cue to get baby onto Mum's breast asap. Learning your baby's feeding cues will save a lot of anxiety. Baby escalates up to starting to cry and get distressed as hunger kicks in (it's never felt hungry in the womb, so hunger is a new and powerful feeling for it. Powerful feelings are quite scary for small babies - they haven't a clue what's going on.) A good resource on feeding cues can be found here: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/basics/hunger-cues.html The latch info in the animation is so good, it doesn't need any comment from us. There are a whole list of latch links that complement this video on "First Latch": http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox8ht-EVnQA If you have already got nipple problems because of a shallow latch, there are links to help on "Poor Latch Good Latch": http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IQYThWMHgjI The sheer competency of this five day old baby, as it seeks to latch itself to the mother, is just so wonderful to watch! This is another baby that knows exactly what it is doing, and Mum is doing a great job in supporting and helping baby. However, as we explain in 'Breast Crawl', not all babies come out ready and willing to latch like this as modern birth practices can get in the way. If your baby is sleepy, disorganised or refusing the breast, the info and links on 'Breast Crawl' will help you: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=G3K87l9hNOE Before we go - we are only reccomending this video, and the excellent breastfeeding advice on the Ameda site - not their products. None of us have ever used them, so we cannot comment. Do go to the site, however, and watch this baby find that nipple and self latch! :-)]]> Wed, 13 Jul 2011 20:37:01 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/43/latch-a-good-drinking/latch-on.html <![CDATA[Breastfeeding basics by Ameda]]> Unknown]]> Wed, 13 Jul 2011 20:36:41 GMT http://www.healthybirthchoices.com/videos/viewvideo/42/education-basics/breastfeeding-basics-by-ameda.html <![CDATA[Natural Childbirth Tips From Midwives : Preventing Perineal Tears]]> Perineal tears may occur during childbirth, but prevention starts with good nutrition, because tissue that is exposed to a good diet will have more elasticity.
