Pregnancy & Infant Loss Program - Alberta Health Services

The Pregnancy & Infant Loss Program provides grief support to parents and other family members who have experienced a pregnancy loss (miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, neon-natal death or termination) through individual, couple and group counseling. There is no charge for this program and no limitation to the number or frequency of sessions clients may receive. Services are available at any time, from immediately following a loss to many years later and are available by self-referral.

Grief support counselling for individuals and/or couples is provided on an ongoing basis throughout the year. A 6-week group support program is also offered at various times. The Pregnancy & Infant Loss Program supports families at the immediate time of their loss by ensuring they are provided with what may be described as an opportunity to say "hello" before needing to say "goodbye" to their baby. The creation of precious memories is an important part of this parenting experience. Memento items such as photographs, footprints, blankets and clothing items, teddy bears, and memory boxes to keep these precious items in are created for families whenever possible.

Resource information and written support materials are also provided specific to the type of loss experienced.

Photo Services

Photo service is available for all families who are experiencing a loss through miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death free of charge.  Staff will photograph your baby and then we will prepare those photos for families to begin to create their personal memories.  Families are encouraged to request staff to take any photo pose they would like.

Families who wish to have photos of their little one reprinted, touched up, or perhaps printed in black and white may do so in a confidential and sensitive manner through the Pregnancy & Infant Loss Program.

Announcement cards, collages and other creations may also be done upon a family's request.
